PUNARNAVADI KASHAYAM;

Punarnavadi Kashayam are Boerhaavia diffusa, Cedrus deodara, Terminalia chebula, Azadirachta indica, zingiber officinale. Pharmacological action of Punarnavadi Kashayam assuages Kapha and pitta conditions when in extreme. It is a natural and herbal diuretic remedy, which can be used to increasing the urine output of patients in various diseases such as generalized edema, kidney failure, ascites, or myxedema, etc. Initially, it increases urine output and then balances urinary outflow. It decreases generalized swelling to due excess fluid accumulation in the body.

Punarnavadi Kashayam is also anti-inflammatory. Due to this, it is commonly prescribed in rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Moreover, its anti-inflammatory action can be seen on the liver as well. It reduces inflammation due to various liver ailments such as viral hepatitis and hepatitis B. It also corrects liver metabolism and decreases serum bilirubin levels. It is useful in the treatment of various liver disorders and hepatitis. It has potent anti-inflammatory characteristics, which appear helpful in hepatitis, joint inflammation due to gout, and bronchitis.

ROLE OF INGREDIENTS;

Boerhaavia diffusa - is mainly used to treat accumulation of fluids (Oedematous conditions) in the body. It is considered to be an effective "Rasayana". It is also used in the treatment of anemia and liver diseases as recommended by Indian Ayurveda.

Azadirachta indica - is used for leprosy, eye disorders, bloody nose, intestinal worms, stomach upset, loss of appetite, skin ulcers, diseases of the heart and blood vessels (cardiovascular disease), fever, diabetes, gum disease (gingivitis), and liver problems. The leaf is also used for birth control and to cause abortions.

Zingiber officinale  - treating nausea, dysentery, heartburn, flatulence, diarrhea, loss of appetite, infections, cough, and bronchitis.

Terminalia chebula -  is used for dysentery. It is used as a lotion for sore eyes. Terminalia chebula is also used topically as a mouthwash and gargle. Intravaginally, Terminalia chebula is used as a douche for treating vaginal infections.

Trichosanthes dioica -  is used as a tonic, febrifuge, and in subacute cases of enlargement of liver and spleen; It is used in edema and alopecia. It is also used as an antipyretic, diuretic, cardiotonic, and laxative.

Picrorrhiza kurroa - used to treat disorders of the liver and upper respiratory tract, reduce fevers, and to treat dyspepsia, chronic diarrhea, and scorpion sting.

Tinospora cordifolia -is used for diabetes, high cholesterol, allergic rhinitis (hay fever), upset stomach, gout, lymphoma, and other cancers, rheumatoid arthritis (RA), hepatitis, peptic ulcer disease (PUD), fever, gonorrhea, syphilis, and to boost the immune system.

Cedrus deodara -act as an expectorant and is useful in curing piles, epilepsy, stones in the kidney and bladder, useful in fevers, and in many other disorders. The oil is antiseptic in nature and helpful in curing skin diseases, wounds, urogenital diseases, diaphoretic as well as insecticide.

DOSAGE AND ADJUVANTS;

The dose is 12 – 24 ml, before food, at about 6 – 7 am and 6 – 7 pm or as directed by an Ayurvedic doctor.

It is usually advised to add an equal amount of water to the kashayam.

Cow urine is usually prescribed as a co-prescription along with this medicine.

It is also available in tablet form.

PATHYA;

Generally non-vegetarian, leafy preparations, snacks made of gingelly, curd, alcohol, too much salt, tamarind, and food items not usually taken and difficult to digest, daytime sleep, sex, and cold water must be totally ;

Bathe in water boiled with Kokilaksha (Hygrophila auriculata) cooled for the head and warm for the body, using Panchamla tailam or Punarnavadi tailam. Don’t bathe daily. Buttermilk boiled with Punarnava (Boerhaavia diffusa) is good for drinking and is to be taken with rice.
