DASAMOOLA RASAYANAM;

Dasamoola Rasayanam (Dashmool Avaleha) is an ayurvedic medicine used to treat a cough, bronchitis, breathing troubles, asthma, common cold, rhinitis, persistent hiccup, phthisis, hoarseness (hoarse voice), chronic fever, anorexia, abdominal lump, bloating, and flatulence. Dasamoola Rasayanam is also spelled as Dasamula Rasayana or Dashmool Rasayana and called as Dashmool Avaleha and Dashamoola Lehyam

Dasamoola Rasayanam is an effective Ayurvedic medicine for many acute and chronic respiratory diseases. It is in herbal jam  form. It is also known as Dashamoola rasayanam. This medicine is based on Kerala Ayurveda ;

ROLE OF INGREDIENTS;

Aegle marmelos -  possesses antidiarrhoeal, antimicrobial, antiviral, radioprotective, anticancer, chemopreventive, antipyretic, ulcer healing, antigenotoxic, diuretic, antifertility and anti-inflammatory properties, which help it to play role in prevention.

Stereospermum colais - is one of the constituents of “Dashmula” preparation used as tonic, diuretic. Root is anti-inflammatory, anti-asthmatic, antiemetic and febrifuge. It is biliary, stimulant, of cardiotonic, diuretic and used in piles and nervous disorders.

Oroxylum indicum - systems for the prevention and treatment of several diseases, such as jaundice, arthritic and rheumatic problems, gastric ulcers, tumors, respiratory diseases, diabetes, and diarrhea and dysentery, among others.

Premna corymbosa -  is anti-inflammatory, stomachic, and anti-pyretic, and is prescribed in liver complaints, cold, obstinate fevers, flatulence, urticaria, rheumatism, and neuralgia. The roots of the plant are constituent of Ayurvedic medicine 'dashamula' and used for a various ailments.

Desmodium gangeticum - has febrifuge, aphrodisiac, analgesic, diuretic, antiinflammatory, and haemorrhagic properties. It is used in postnatal complaints, diarrhoea, chronic fever, biliousness, cough, vomiting, and asthma. It is an important ingredient of dasmoolarishta and chyavanprash.

Pseudarthira viscida - whole plant of salaparni is used for medicinal purpose in Ayurvedic medicine. The herb is seldom used externally. Internally it is useful in vast range of diseases. It is used in the treatment for asthma and nervous dysfunction.

Adhatoda beddomei - is useful in treating cold and cough, asthma and chronic bronchitis. In acute stages of bronchitis, it gives unfailing relief especially where the sputum is thick and sticky, it liquefies sputum so that it can come up more ;

Zingiber officinale -  is one of the most widely used natural products consumed as a spice and medicine for treating nausea, dysentery, heartburn, flatulence, diarrhea, loss of appetite, infections, cough, and bronchitis.

Tribulus terrestris  - gonorrhea, liver disease (hepatitis), inflammation, joint pain (rheumatism), leprosy, coughs, headache, dizziness (vertigo), chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), and enhancing athletic performance. It is also used for stimulating appetite and as an astringent, tonic, and mood enhancer.

Solanum indicum - is useful in the treatment of asthma, catarrh, dropsy, chest pain, chronic fever, colic, dry and spasmodic cough, oedema, scorpion stings, difficult urination, and worm infestation.

Solanum xanthocarpum - used for treating cough, fever, and heart diseases. It has several pharmacological effects like antipyretic, antitumor, hypotensive, antianaphylactic, antiasthmatic, and aphrodisiac activities.

Piper nigrum - is used traditionally for the treatment of various diseases including; cough, cold, dyspnea throat diseases, intermittent fever, dysentery, stomachache, worms and piles.

Piper longum - is most commonly used to treat chronic bronchitis, asthma, constipation, gonorrhea, paralysis of the tongue, diarrhea, cholera, chronic malaria, viral hepatitis, respiratory infections, stomachache, bronchitis, diseases of the spleen, cough, and tumors.

Justicia beddomei - Bennet is used as an expectorant especially in chronic bronchitis and asthma. It relieves cough and breathlessness. It is also prescribed commonly for local bleeding due to peptic ulcer, piles etc. Its local use gives relief in pyorrhoea and in bleeding gums.

Gmelina arborea - extracts are reported to have wound-healing and antidiarrheal properties. Various studies demonstrated that G. arborea and its constituents possess several pharmacological activities like anti-oxidant, anti-diabetic, anti-inflammatory, antiulcer, analgesic, anti-nociceptive, anticancer and wound healing activities

Justicia adhatoda - have been used in the treatments of cough, colds, asthma, to liquefy sputum, as a bronchodilator, bronchial catarrh, bronchitis, and tuberculosis

Myristica fragrans  - is a well-known aromatic perennial plant with a characteristic scent that possesses multiple medicinal applications, being used to treat stomach ulcers, indigestion, liver disorders, and as emmenagogue, nervine, diuretic, diaphoretic, and aphrodisiac.

Cinnamomum zeylanicum -anti-microbial and anti-parasitic activity,  lowering of blood glucose, blood pressure and serum cholesterol, anti-oxidant and free-radical scavenging properties,  inhibition of tau aggregation and filament formation (hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease)

Crocus sativus - antihypertensive, anticonvulsant, antitussive, antigenototoxic and cytotoxic effects, anxiolytic aphrodisiac, antioxidant, antidepressant, antinociceptive , anti-inflammatory, and relaxant activity.

Cuminum cyminum - are widely used as the spice for their distinctive aroma, they are also commonly used in traditional medicine to treat a variety of diseases, including chronic diarrhoea and dyspepsia, acute gastritis, diabetes, and cancer.

Nigella sativa -  used for the treatment of a variety of disorders, diseases and conditions pertaining to respiratory system, digestive tract, kidney and liver function, cardio vascular system and immune system support, as well as for general well-being

Inula racemosa -  is an aromatic tonic, febrifuge, and expectorant with anti-inflammatory, carminative, diuretic, and antiseptic properties. The plant is used in chronic bronchitis and rheumatism. Dried rhizomes and roots are used to cure loss of appetite and stomach troubles

Mesua ferrea -  useful in skin diseases like leprosy, itching, erysipelas, scabies, wounds and excessive sweating as it provides fragility and transparency to the skin. Dried flowers are used in Dysentery with Mucus. Oil from the seeds of this tree are used in treating sores and rheumatism.

Elettaria cardamomum - is used to cure indigestion, nausea, vomiting and used to expel out phlegm out of body. It is very beneficial in congestion of lungs and other pulmonary diseases. It is also used as laxative and used to prevent stomach pain, flatulence and gripping.

Cuminum cyminum -  used in traditional medicine to treat a variety of diseases, including chronic diarrhoea and dyspepsia, acute gastritis, diabetes, and cancer.

Coraindrum sativum - is taken by mouth for stomach and intestinal problems including upset stomach, nausea, diarrhea, intestinal gas, constipation, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). It is also taken by mouth for convulsions, insomnia, anxiety, and to treat infections caused by bacteria and fungus.

Cedrus deodara - act as expectorant and useful in curing piles, epilepsy, stones in the kidney and bladder, useful in fevers and in many other disorders. The oil is antiseptic in nature and helpful in curing skin diseases, wounds, urogenital diseases, diaphoretic as well as insecticide

Aerua lanata -  is commonly described in Ayurveda as a diuretic with anti-inflammatory, antihelmintic, anti-bacterial and mild analgesic effects. It is used in the treatment of lithiasis, cough, asthma, and headache and as an antidote for rat poisoning.

INDICATIONS;

It is used in the treatment of Chronic respiratory conditions like bronchitis, asthma,

It has potent anti inflammatory, bronchodilator and antitussive effects.

DOSAGE AND ADJUVANTS;

Take 5 – 10 grams once or two times  a day after food or before food, or as directed by Ayurvedic doctor.

It is administered along with honey or warm water.

Dosage for children below 5 years of age – 1 – 2 grams, once or twice a day, along with a teaspoon of honey or warm water / milk.

Dosage for children between 5 – 12 years of age – 5 grams once or twice a day along with a teaspoon of honey or warm water / milk.

This medicine is also known as Dasamula rasayanam
